Driving Subsea Performance with Hydraulic Power Innovation
Project Background
AFP recently completed the successful delivery of a Subsea Production Hydraulic Power Unit (PHPU) for TechnipFMC, as part of the Barossa Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) project.
This end-to-end, in-house project was executed by our team of specialists, covering every stage from design and engineering through to manufacturing the unit. The PHPU is a critical system that delivers reliable hydraulic power to the subsea field, supporting the safe and efficient operation of vital equipment such as XTs, manifolds and SSIVs.
Now fully installed and operational on board the Barossa FPSO, the PHPU demonstrates AFP’s capability to deliver complex subsea systems that meet the highest standards of reliability, safety and performance.
Key Features of the PHPU
- Complete in-house delivery – design, build, assembly and testing by AFP.
- Transportable frame – containerised frame with 4 lift points for safe onshore lifting, approx. 7.0m x 3.0m x 3.3m.
- Hydraulic capability – multiple HP and LP circuits, SSIV circuits, plus refilling and recirculation capacity.
- Large reservoir capacity – dual 3,000L tanks for supply and return sides.
- Compliance and safety – designed to Zone 2 hazardous area requirements (Gas Group IIB, Temp. Class T3) in accordance with IEC 60079.
- High-quality construction – 316 stainless steel framework, DNVGL and AWS-certified fabrication, with advanced filtration and cleanliness standards.
- Electrical systems – powered by 690VAC and 230VAC supplies, with duty/standby pump configurations and VSD-controlled motors.
- Efficient noise control – external sound pressure level maintained at max 82 dBA.

Project Outcomes
The project delivered a fully engineered subsea PHPU ready for installation on the Barossa FPSO, meeting strict international design and safety standards. The solution provided TechnipFMC with a reliable and maintainable hydraulic power system capable of supporting long-term subsea operations. In doing so, AFP demonstrated its expertise in delivering turnkey subsea power solutions, managing the entire process from concept and design through to final testing and documentation.
