Ammonia Injection Skid: Precision Engineering for Yara Pilbara Nitrates

Project Background

AFP was engaged by Yara Pilbara Nitrates, a joint venture between Yara International ASA and Orica Limited, which operates a world-class technical ammonium nitrate facility on the Burrup Peninsula near Karratha, Western Australia.

For this project, AFP was contracted to design and deliver a specialised Ammonia Injection Skid. The scope included engineering, 3D modelling, fabrication, assembly, factory acceptance testing (FAT), and full documentation, providing a turnkey solution from concept to delivery.

The system was developed to generate a 10% aqueous ammonia solution by mixing ammonia gas with demineralised water inside a dedicated dosing tank. To ensure both safety and accuracy, the process incorporates orifice plates that regulate filling rates, maintaining the correct flowrate and gas-to-water ratio. Any excess ammonia venting from the dosing tank is safely removed by a dedicated scrubber unit, ensuring full compliance with environmental and safety standards.

Key Features

  • High-precision metering pumps: Milton Roy API 675 diaphragm pumps (duty and standby) with rupture detection to ensure reliable and safe operation.
  • Robust dosing capacity: A 2000L dosing tank equipped with sintered mesh spargers for efficient delivery of ammonia gas.
  • Comprehensive instrumentation: Integrated level and temperature transmitters, along with a clear level gauge, for continuous monitoring and control.
  • Accurate calibration: Dedicated calibration pot for maintaining precise dosing accuracy.
  • Safety and compliance: A 100L scrubber tank plus PSV and pressure gauges on each pump line provide enhanced safety protection.
  • Durable construction: Painted carbon steel frame with an integral drip tray for long-lasting performance and environmental protection.
  • User-friendly controls: Panel-mounted control system for straightforward operation and monitoring

Project Outcome

The completed skid was delivered as a turnkey engineered solution, successfully passing FAT and client inspections. The system provides Yara Pilbara Nitrates with a reliable, safe, and precisely controlled method of producing and dosing aqueous ammonia.

By combining heavy-duty design, safety-first engineering, and high-quality components, Aussie Fluid Power ensured the solution met both performance and compliance requirements, supporting long-term plant reliability.
